Caleb Williams Heisman Trophy Odds: USC QB Leapfrogs Alabama QB Bryce Young Heading Into Week 6

Three quarterbacks stand above everyone else on Heisman Trophy odds boards. USC quarterback Caleb Williams Heisman Trophy odds are among the shortest. Williams is jockeying with fellow quarterbacks CJ Stroud of Ohio State and Bryce Young of Alabama.

Each quarterback led his team to victory in Week 5, though the Heisman Trophy landscape shifted in the process. Williams jumped Young in the Heisman Trophy odds

USC football is ranked No. 6 in the Associated Press Top 25 and knows a thing or two about producing top-of-the-line quarterbacks. Williams, a true sophomore, is on his way to adding his name to the list of college football greats. He opened the season with three quality performances before stumbling a bit against Oregon State.

A ho-hum performance is something that will happen over the course of the season for Heisman Trophy favorites. The fact that the Trojans won keeps Williams in the mix, though his odds stretched beyond Young’s.

The Trojans’ national title odds are priced tightly across the industry’s top sportsbooks, and they’re in a tier just below the likes of Alabama, Ohio State, and Georgia. Strong statistical production from Williams married to USC championship contention is a good formula for a Heisman Trophy bid.

(Odds updated Oct. 3)

Williams delivered a sterling performance in Week 5 against Arizona State, finishing 27 of 37 for 348 yards and three touchdowns (to one interception). He added a score and additional 44 yards on the ground. Ultimately, he led the Trojans to a convincing 42-25 victory, keeping the Trojans’ College Football Playoff hopes alive. Team success will keep Williams near the front of the pack.

Home games against Washington State and at No. 11 Utah are next on the schedule for USC. The Cougars of Washington State are 4-1, so they’re not a team USC can look past. It will be a significant two-week stretch.

Caleb Williams Is in the Right Place for QB Success

The Trojans will travel as far as Williams leads them. He opened with longer odds than Ohio State’s CJ Stroud and Alabama’s Bryce Young, and those three will likely jockey for position all season. As long as each team is undefeated, the odds will primarily be dictated by their box scores.

Heisman Trophy odds and national championship prices are tied together to a degree — the better USC performs, the more exposure Williams receives. USC is favored to win the Pac-12. The Trojans are considered among the favorites to contend for a national title. They’re ranked No. 6 in the latest AP Poll, which is a good place for them to lurk as they continue to pursue a ticket to the College Football Playoff.

Williams’ head coach, Lincoln Riley, paved the way when he left Oklahoma for USC’s head coaching vacancy. Williams played under Riley as a true freshman at Oklahoma, and the existing relationship has allowed the pair to combine to lead the Trojans to a 4-0 start to the season.

Riley earned the reputation as a “quarterback whisperer” thanks to his work with Baker Mayfield and Kyler Murray, each No. 1 overall selections in the NFL Draft, and Jalen Hurts, the starting quarterback for the Philadelphia Eagles.

A quality season from Williams will not only add to Lincoln’s legacy as a quarterback guru, but also the program’s lineage of premier college-turned-professional quarterbacks. There’s no program in college football that holds the official title of “Quarterback U,” but USC earns a spot in the discussion.

Should Williams lead the Trojans into January football and finish as a Heisman Trophy finalist, USC will be well on its way to claiming full custody of that enviable tag.

USC Has Plenty of Wide Receivers to Target

Williams is getting quality support from his wide receiver corps. Wide receiver Jordan Addison transferred from Pittsburgh, where he finished with 100 receptions, 1,593 receiving yards, and 17 touchdowns in 2021. He leads the team with 29 receptions, 442 yards, and six touchdowns. Addison ranks No. 18 on Mel Kiper Jr.’s (early) 2023 NFL Draft Big Board and will continue to serve as Williams’ top target.

Behind Addison, Mario Williams and Tahj Washington serve as receiving threats.

The 2022 roster is transfer-heavy. USC inked the arguably the top class of transfers in the country this past offseason, headlined by Caleb Williams and Addison, both former five-star recruits.

Who’s in the Running for the 2022 Heisman Trophy?

Caleb Williams is among the favorites to win the 2022 Heisman Trophy. He’s priced longer than quarterback CJ Stroud, but jumped ahead of Bryce Young. Tennessee quarterback Hendon Hooker and Georgia quarterback Stetson Bennett are long shots, but they’ve played their way into the mix nonetheless.

There’s a lot to like about Williams’ Heisman Trophy odds from a betting perspective even though they trail Stroud. A few more good games will prompt the odds to shrink, and if Stroud slips, the gap will shrink further.

CJ Stroud, QB, Ohio State

Stroud is the favorite to win the 2022 Heisman Trophy as he leads the undefeated Ohio State Buckeyes. Stroud’s statistical output was limited because the Buckeyes dominated Rutgers 49-10.

The Buckeyes’ next game is against Michigan State in Lansing, MI, but they have a big matchup brewing at Penn State that will take place at the end of the month. The Buckeyes can’t afford to look ahead past their upcoming opponents though.

Stroud has produced the majority of his production without top wide receiver Jaxon Smith-Njigba, who injured his hamstring against Notre Dame. Marvin Harrison Jr. and Emeka Egbuka are among the receivers picking up the slack.

Bryce Young, QB, Alabama

Young carved defenses on his way to the 2021 Heisman Trophy, and he’s on the hunt for more hardware before presumably jumping to the NFL. He left Saturday’s game with a sprained shoulder. Before he was forced out of action, Young finished 7 of 13 for 173 with one touchdown and one interception. It’s a modest performance that prompted his odds to stretch beyond Williams’.

Alabama will need to get Young back sooner than later. Four of the Crimson Tides’ next five opponents are ranked.

Young continues to forge chemistry with a new corps of wide receivers after Jameson Williams and John Metchie III departed for the NFL. He’s spreading the ball around among his primary receivers, Traeshon Holden, Kobe Prentice, and Jermaine Burton.

Hendon Hooker, QB, Tennessee

Hooker, the 24-year-old signal-caller for the Vols, is climbing odds boards thanks, in part, to Tennessee’s 4-0 start. Hooker is completing over 70% of his passes with 11 total touchdowns (three rushing).

Speaking of rushing, his dual-threat ability (175 rushing yards) adds a little extra element for opposing defenses to game plan for each week. Whether he’ll be able to do enough to overtake the likes of Stroud, Young, and Williams remains to be seen. As long as Tennessee continues to win and Hooker continues to produce quality numbers, Hooker will have an opportunity to continue climbing Heisman Trophy odds boards.

The Volunteers have two tough tests ahead of them: at LSU, vs. Alabama. Hooker and the team will be tested to a great degree. If Tennessee stumbles in those contests, it will be awfully difficult for Hooker to earn the votes he needs to take home the Heisman Trophy.

Stetson Bennett, QB, Georgia

Bennett has joined Hooker as an emerging longshot, and leader of an undefeated team. Georgia outlasted a plucky Missouri Tigers team, 26-22. Bennett’s statistics weren’t gaudy (312 yards, zero TD, zero INT). He has five touchdowns to only one interception, but Bennett’s shrinking odds are primarily about the performance of Georgia overall.

The Bulldogs are 5-0, and ranked No. 2 in the nation. With the rare exception, there’s really no such thing as an easy game in the SEC, as the Bulldogs experienced last week, but Georgia doesn’t have what most would consider a daunting stretch of opponents coming up through the gauntlet.

For Bennett to continue threatening for the Heisman Trophy, he’ll almost certainly need to lead the Bulldogs to the College Football Playoff. He won’t have the stats to compete with the likes of Young and Stroud, but winning often makes up the gap. Stetson remains a long-shot, but bettors should at least keep him within their peripheral vision.

USC Heisman Trophy History

The USC Trojans are one of college football’s flagship programs and brands. Some of the top players in college football — and NFL — history hail from USC. The list of star players the program has produced includes seven Heisman Trophy winners.

USC Trojans Heisman Trophy Winners

  • Reggie Bush, RB, 2005
  • Matt Leinart, QB, 2004
  • Carson Palmer, QB, 2002
  • Marcus Allen, RB, 1981
  • Charles White, RB, 1979
  • OJ Simpson, RB, 1968
  • Mike Garrett, RB, 1965

It’s a testament to USC’s historical greatness that it can make strong claims to hold the titles of “Quarterback U” and “Running Back U.” The list of dominant backs is just as impressive as the signal-callers the school has produced.

Caleb Williams is USC’s best chance at adding another name to the program’s list of Heisman winners — and fuel to its “QBU” claim.
