The California Gambler’s Guide to Sports Betting in Oregon

So … sports betting in California isn’t becoming legal any time soon.

The earliest it could happen is 2025, and that’s only if a sports betting ballot initiative gets passed in the November 2024 election. And, judging by the landslide losses of Prop 26 and Prop 27 in 2022, that may be an uphill battle.

Luckily for Californians eager to bet on sports, they are surrounded by states with legal sports betting.

For those in Northern California, Oregon is within manageable driving distance (and just a short trip for bettors in Del Norte County, Siskiyou County, and Modoc County). Oregon has had legal sports betting since August 2019.

Below is the California Casinos guide to sports betting in Oregon — designed exclusively for Californians. We’ll break down the best Oregon retail sportsbooks and online sports betting apps, as well as driving distance, cost, and things to do for your Oregon sports betting road trip with your friends.

IF CA EVER HAS SPORTS BETTING … Potential California Sportsbook Bonuses

Oregon Retail Sports Betting

There are currently four Oregon retail sportsbooks up and running at four Indian casinos. However, none are exactly close to the California-Oregon border.

The closest sits 182 miles north of the border, and the furthest is 301 miles.

So, even if you’re living in the northernmost reaches of Northern California, you’ll have a bit of a drive for in-person sports betting. But that’s the best option for many California residents who want to bet on sports at a retail sportsbook.

Spirit Mountain Casino (BetMGM)

BetMGM partnered with the Confederated Tribes of Grand Ronde to launch the BetMGM Sportsbook at Spirit Mountain Casino in Grand Ronde (276 miles from the CA-OR border).

The sports lounge features a high-definition video wall, 82-inch TVs, 12 betting kiosks, and a full-service bar with a food menu. It’s open Monday-Friday from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m., Saturday from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., and Sunday from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m.

What’s unique about Spirit Mountain is that bettors can also download the BetMGM Sports Spirit Mountain app to place mobile bets from anywhere on the casino premises. You must sign up at the casino sportsbook to be eligible to download the app, and you must also be a Coyote Club member. Then, you must complete your registration at the sportsbook and present an ID to be able to fund your mobile account.

You will not be able to use app anywhere off the casino property.

Chinook Winds Casino Resort

The Confederated Tribes of Siletz Indians own and operate their own sportsbook at Chinook Winds Casino Resort in Lincoln City (301 miles from CA-OR border) called the Sports Wagering Lounge.

It was the first legal Oregon retail sportsbook to open on Aug. 27, 2019. There are three teller terminals and one self-serve kiosk.

Hours of operation are: Monday-Thursday 10 a.m. to 11 p.m., and Friday-Sunday 8 a.m. to 11 p.m.

Three Rivers Casino Resort

The Sportsbook at Three Rivers Casino Resort in Florence (205 miles from CA-OR border) provides a comfortable venue to bet on and watch sports. It’s right next to the nonsmoking gaming floor, Blue Bills Sports Bar and Tap Room, and Riverside Food Court.

It has a 200-square-feet LED TV wall and 32 seats.

Beyond the sportsbook terminals, there are also six self-serve kiosks in the casino.

The hours of operation are 24/7.

The Confederated Tribes of the Coos, Lower Umpqua, & Siuslaw Indians own and operate both Three Rivers Casino Resort locations in Florence and Coos Bay. (There is no sportsbook at the Coos Bay casino.) California gambler's guide to sports betting in Oregon, retail sportsbooks map

The Mill Casino, Hotel & RV Park

Advertising itself as Southern Oregon’s Only Sports Betting, The Mill Casino, Hotel & RV Park in North Bend doesn’t have a dedicated sportsbook location. It instead offers a handful of self-serve sports betting kiosks throughout the casino floor. It also has Warehouse 101, the casino’s sports bar and night club with 18 TVs constantly on sports.

At 182 miles from the CA-OR border, The Mill Casino, Hotel & RV Park is the closest Oregon retail sportsbook to California. It’s owned and operated by the Coquille Indian Tribe.

The sports betting kiosks are open from 8 a.m. to 2 a.m. daily.

Warehouse 101’s hours of operation are: Monday-Thursday 11 a.m. to 11 p.m., Friday 10 a.m. to 2 a.m., Saturday 9:30 a.m. to 2 a.m., and Sunday 9:30 a.m. to 11 p.m. These hours may be expanded for special sporting events, such as March Madness.

Online Sports Betting in Oregon

DraftKings Oregon

There is only one online sports betting option currently live in Oregon: DraftKings Sportsbook.

Run in partnership with the Oregon Lottery, DraftKings Oregon launched in January 2022 and took over for Scoreboard as the state’s lone mobile sportsbook app. If they want to, a California resident could pull over as soon as they drive past the CA-OR border, download the DraftKings app, and start betting on sports.

The Oregon Lottery chose well in picking DraftKings to be the state’s mobile sports betting option. DraftKings has a universally liked app design and layout. Its welcome promo is among the most rewarding in the industry. And you won’t find a deeper menu of sports and leagues to bet on.

Scoreboard launched in October 2019 in partnership with the Oregon Lottery. But it was never very well-received, and it was phased out in favor of DraftKings after a couple years.

Technically, you can also use the BetMGM Sports Spirit Mountain app to bet on sports in Oregon, but only on Spirit Mountain Casino property.

Take a Sports Betting Trip to Oregon

Although Oregon retail sportsbooks may be just a few hours away from you, depending on where you live, it may be easier to plan a Southern Oregon sports betting trip with your friends — where you have fun during the day, then bet on sports using DraftKings Oregon from your AirBNB at night.

Here are a few road trip ideas.

Brookings

Brookings is just 6 miles north of California.

It offers some of the most breathtaking coastal views in the Pacific Northwest, most notably along the 15-mile Samuel H. Boardman State Scenic Corridor. There are plenty of other outdoorsy things to do in Brookings, too. Redwood lovers would enjoy the Oregon Redwood Trail. If you enjoy storybook fields of flowers, you could check out Azalea Park.

Some of the PNW’s best seafood restaurants are at the port of Brookings Harbor, and you can embark on fishing expeditions of your own if you want.

The Chetco Brewing Company is a well-regarded micro-brewery that specializes in vegan beers. Yes, vegan beers. They use Irish moss to clarify their beers, and they never use chemicals or pesticides.

Oregon Caves

About 38 miles north of California, the Oregon Caves National Monument is a breathtaking example of Earth’s natural wonder.

Nicknamed the “Marble Halls of Oregon”, these caves are tucked in the Siskiyou Mountains. Over millions upon millions of years, acidic water etched through these mountains’ inner marble rock and created awe-inspiring tunnels and caverns.

Stay in nearby Cave Junction and bookend your tour of the caves with sports betting action.

Medford, Ashland, Klamath Falls

These are three charming Southern Oregon cities that each offer something unique. It wouldn’t be hard at all to spend a long, three-day sports betting weekend in these three cities. One per day, perhaps.

Golf Trip

Southern Oregon is peppered with magnificent golf courses. Pick three or four and plan a weekend golf/sports betting road trip with your friends. The best course is in Klamath Falls. Running Y Ranch Resort boasts the only Arnold Palmer-designed golf course in Oregon.

Klamath Falls is just 17 miles north of California.

Driving Distance and Cost

Redding to North Bend (317 miles)

If you want to make an in-person sports betting trip, the closest option is The Mill Casino, Hotel & RV Park. It’s about a 5-hour drive from Redding. That’d be about $75 for roundtrip gas. Add that to a couple nights at The Mill, and it’s about $475.

The fancier sportsbooks are a bit further up the Oregon Coast. So add a chunk of change if you want to go to one of those.

Eureka to North Bend (220 miles)

Eureka to North Bend is just shy of a 4.5-hour drive. That’s about $67 for roundtrip gas, so $467 in total if you want to plan your weekend sports betting trip at The Mill, right on beautiful Coos Bay.
