California Thoroughbred Horse Racing:
The Hollywood Derby is held at the Del Mar Racetrack. The prize purse is worth $300,000 to the winner. The Grade 1 race is open to 3-year-old horses or older and is run over 9 furlongs.
The event was once called the Westerner Stakes, and the race has been run on both dirt and turf over the years. Currently, the thoroughbred race is a turf event and was last won by John R. Velazquez riding Mo Town in a time of 1:46.36. Bill Shoemaker is the most successful jockey in this race, though, having won 8 events between 1951 and 1986.
