If sports betting in the state becomes legal, California sports betting bonuses are going to be some of the best ever offered in the US industry.
Why? Because, with just under 40 million residents, California is by far the country’s largest state and there is a just-about unfathomable amount of money to be made on sports betting in the state.
So, you’d better believe any California sports betting companies — whether online or retail — will do their best to attract as many customers as possible. That’s why our recommendation to register for multiple sports betting apps will hold even truer in order to take advantage of multiple California sportsbook bonuses.
Plus, joining multiple apps will allow you to see what you like, see what you don’t like, and eventually narrow your choices down to a favorite few.
Don’t forget about ongoing promos and bonuses, either. Although welcome bonuses get most of the attention, these ongoing promotions are what keep customers loyal to one particular sportsbook over another.
While we don’t know exactly what sportsbooks will launch and what they’ll offer as bonuses, we can review the promos they offer in other states to get an idea of what to expect here in the Golden State. Even though these might not be the exact promotions you’ll see if Prop 27 passes, chances are they’ll at least be quite similar.
Best California Sportsbook Bonuses
Here are what we predict could be the California sportsbook promotions if Prop 27 gets passed, along with bonus codes and promo codes for each.

High-quality app that's easy to download and navigate
Deep and varied betting options, from major leagues to niche sports
Healthy supply of enticing ongoing promotions
Can be better for experienced bettors than new ones
Deposit match requires hefty investment for full reward
DraftKings is really, really tough to beat in the sports betting industry. There’s a reason it’s seen as one of the gold-standard platforms. It boasts the deepest menu of sports and leagues to bet on (who knew you could bet on cornhole?) and its app has no significant flaws. DraftKings will always give you competitive odds, as well as any deposit or cashout method you could ever want. Simply put: DraftKings will be a must-download for any California sports bettor.
DraftKings is one of the most prominent backers of Prop 27. On Aug. 5, it sent out a press release in which it said it was “cautiously optimistic” Prop 27 would pass in November. DraftKings is also one of the leading donors to the Prop 27 campaign, having contributed north of $34 million so far.
If DraftKings launches, use our exclusive DraftKings California promo code to get $50 free plus a 20% deposit match up to $1,000.
Easy-to-use app with a streamlined interface
Excellent range of bet types to choose from
Allows users to cash out before game is over with certain bets
Average customer support
Ongoing promotions can be spendy
FanDuel boasts arguably the best sports betting app in the industry. But beyond a streamlined mobile experience, FanDuel also offers bettors a quality range of betting options and an excellent promo offer. In addition, FanDuel has become known as a trend-setter on oddboards, making it the potential best California sportsbook for line-shopping.
FanDuel is also a prominent backer of Prop 27, both in public rhetoric and in monetary contributions. FanDuel has donated $35 million to the Prop 27 campaign — the most of any sportsbook company.
If FanDuel launches, use our exclusive FanDuel California promo code to get your “no sweat first bet” up to $1,000.
Deep menu of sports and leagues to bet on from around the world
One of the industry's best welcome offers
Caesars Rewards program
Not always the best odds
Other sportsbooks have a better app
Caesars Sportsbook is backed by one of the biggest global entertainment brands in Caesars Entertainment. But it’s not just a flashy name. This sportsbook has great market depth and one of the best rewards programs in the industry. Those two factors, plus a quality mobile experience and odds that are usually pretty competitive, will leave Californians happy if they choose to download Caesars Sportsbook.
Interestingly, Caesars Sportsbook is not picking sides in the California sports betting fight — not endorsing Prop 27 or Prop 26. Caesars CEO Tom Reeg said this is due to the company’s longstanding relationships with tribes Caesars has partnered with. This leads one to believe that, if Prop 26 passes and Prop 27 doesn’t, Caesars could partner with a California tribe to offer a sportsbook at their retail casino.
If Caesars Sportsbook launches, use our exclusive Caesars Sportsbook California promo code to get your first bet on Caesars up to $1,250.
BetMGM Rewards is second to none
Competitive odds across all types of bets, including futures
Offers live streaming of certain sports
Android app isn't the best
Other sportsbooks have better welcome offers
BetMGM, much like Caesars Sportsbook, benefits from being associated with another world-renowned entreatment and gambling company, MGM Resorts. It’s hard to find a flaw with BetMGM Sportsbook. It offers users an easy-to-use app, it boasts routinely competitive odds, and it keeps customers happy with stellar ongoing promotions and bonuses.
BetMGM has also made $25 million in monetary contributions to the Prop 27 campaign.
If BetMGM launches, use our exclusive BetMGM California bonus code to get a risk-free bet up to $1,000.
Second chance free bet of up to $500 has no playthrough requirement
Ongoing promos for profit boosts across several sports
Allows users to create customizable parlays with alternative lines
App isn't streamlined or easy to navigate
Not as many sports and leagues to choose from
BetRivers has quickly established itself as a major player in the sportsbook industry, even though it’s smaller compared to the giants like DraftKings and FanDuel. BetRivers Sportsbook has an impressive array of sports and league betting options, paired with a well-designed platform — on desktop, at least. It offers good ongoing bonuses, and you’ll rarely be disappointed by the sportsbook’s odds.
If BetRivers launches, use our exclusive BetRivers California bonus code to get a second chance free bet up to $500. This offer is unique because the free bet has only a 1x playthrough requirement.
PointsBetting is a one-of-a-kind wager with potentially high rewards
App quality competes with the best of the best in the industry
Biggest welcome bonus offer in the US
Odds tend to lag behind other sportsbooks
PointsBetting can cause big losses
PointsBet punches well above its weight in the sports betting industry thanks to its near-flawless app, its huge welcome bonus, and its one-of-a-kind type of wagering. The $2,000 value on the new user promo offer is the most among US sportsbooks. And, say what you will about its potential for losing a lot of money, PointsBetting is certainly a unique way to bet on sports, and it’s a change of pace to traditional sports betting.
If PointsBet launches, use our exclusive PointsBet California promo code to get your two risk-free bets up to $2,000.
Uses promotional sweepstakes model so it's completely legal
Redeem fake digital currency for real cash prizes
Incorporates social component so you can have fun playing against friends
Limited sports betting options — no futures bets, for example
Fliff offers a completely free and legal way to bet on sports in California for a chance to win money right now, even though online sports betting is illegal. How? Fliff has players use two fake digital currencies: Fliff Coins and Fliff Cash. Fliff Coins are easy to get, and you can’t do anything with them except make bets in the app. Fliff Cash, however, can be redeemed for real cash prizes once you accumulate enough.
This type of betting is perfectly legal in California because the Fliff Cash you can redeem for actual money has no real-world value in itself. In other words: You can’t use Fliff Cash to buy groceries.
Fliff California won’t have as much utility if sports betting becomes legal in California — especially online sports betting. But, if you pay attention to the polls, it doesn’t sound like that’s going to happen until at least 2024.
Use our exclusive Fliff promo code to get $25 in Fliff Cash and 250,000 Fliff Coins.
Types of California Sports Betting Promos
Welcome bonuses are some of the most exciting aspects of when a state launches sports betting. So Californians may want to get familiar with the different types of promos they’ll encounter.
And it really doesn’t matter if Prop 26 or Prop 27 passes. Whether it’s Indian casinos or mobile sportsbooks, welcome bonuses will be offered no matter where or how you wager.
Loyalty and VIP programs will also be prominent in whatever form the California sports betting market takes.
When it comes to bonuses and promos, every bettor can find something that best fits their betting preferences. Here are the different types of bonuses Californians can expect when their state launches sports betting.
Risk-free bets are one of the two most common types of bonuses. Most often you’ll see them as welcome bonuses, but risk-free bets can be parts of ongoing promos, too. BetMGM and PointsBet currently offer risk-free bets to new users.
Other apps offer them, too, but they stray from the risk-free language. FanDuel offers a “no sweat first bet” up to $1,000. BetRivers has a “second chance free bet” up to $500. Caesars Sportsbook is giving “your first bet on Caesars” up to $1,250.
Whatever you call them, risk-free bets all work the same way: If you lose your first bet, the sportsbook will refund you in full with site credits. These credits cannot be withdrawn as cash — they must be used for wagers. Also, there’s often a playthrough requirement before you can use those site credits. (Although BetRivers doesn’t have one.) Always read the terms and conditions so you know what you’re signing up for.
These risk-free bets, if they’re a welcome bonus, will be for the bettor’s first wager. And it’s not for your first lost bet. Just your first bet. So if you win that first wager, awesome. But your chance at a full refund is now no longer there.
You’ll often find risk-free bet bonuses with California horse race betting apps, too.
Deposit bonuses will also be super common in California, should Prop 26 or Prop 27 pass. These welcome promos most often come with a specific minimum deposit to qualify. Also, they will almost certainly only be available on your first deposit.
Let’s use DraftKings’ 20% deposit match up to $1,000 for an example. If you were to make a first deposit of $500, DraftKings would match the deposit with $100 in site credits (20% of 500 is 100). However, you won’t get all those site credits at once. There’s usually a playthrough requirement, and you’ll often get the credits slowly dispersed over time.
Loyalty programs reward bettors who consistently bet big. BetRivers offers a loyalty program that takes a bettor’s rolling average wager amount and sets bettors in a reward tier. Reward tiers unlock special features like exclusive bonus offers and expedited withdrawals.
It keeps the biggest bettors happy while maximizing BetRivers’ revenue. For high-rollers, VIP and loyalty programs may be worth the investment. However, they’re only worth it if bettors wager consistently like they normally would. Bettors who blow money they don’t have won’t realize gains from a sportsbook VIP program.
One of the most impressive loyalty programs comes from Caesars Sportsbook. Caesars’ new app is linked to the Caesars Rewards program. Bettors will receive points towards their Rewards when they place bets on the app, win or lose.
No-deposit bonuses are popular alternatives for sports bettors who prefer simpler incentives. Bettors don’t have to worry about the strings attached or think too hard about where they can spend the bonuses. The most common type of no-deposit bonus is a free bet. For instance, DraftKings offers a $50 free bet.
Despite their relatively low value, these bonuses are great for new players who may want to check out a new sportsbook app without a financial commitment.
Bettors don’t have to make a deposit to take advantage of these bonuses, hence the name. They’re a great way for sportsbooks to provide bettors the opportunity to flip through a book’s interface and check out its betting lines before committing to it. It’s still important for bettors to be in tune with the fine print of no-deposit bonuses.
When Will Sportsbook Bonuses Be Offered in California?
Probably not until 2025, at the earliest. (So you’ve got plenty of time to study this information.)
That’s because Prop 26 and Prop 27 are projected to fail in the November 2022 election — by significant margins, too. It appears the campaigns spent too much time attacking each other rather than focusing on promoting their own measure.
Still, if Prop 27 somehow pulls a Hail Mary and passes, it stipulates online sports betting licenses could start being applied for on June 10, 2023, and sports betting would launch no later than Aug. 29, 2023.
If Prop 26 passes, the tribes who own California Indian casinos would have to negotiate new gaming compacts that include sports betting. Racetracks would also likely need to go through some formal procedure to open retail sportsbooks on their premises, although Prop 26 doesn’t mention any specifics about that.
That process likely wouldn’t be any faster than that of Prop 27. So, if either measure passes in November, the earliest you can expect to place sports bets would probably be August or September 2023.
Of course, with both measures poised to fail, voters will have to wait until the 2024 election for another change to legalize sports betting.
But if you’re looking for a non-traditional sports betting bonus you can access now, look no further than Fliff. The Fliff app operates on the promotional sweepstakes model.
What that means: Players only play with fake digital currencies, and one of those types of currency — Fliff Cash — can be redeemed for cash prizes. So, while the currency you play with has no real-world value, the cash prizes do.
As we talked about earlier, Fliff is offering California users who use our promo code $25 in Fliff Cash, as well as 250,000 Fliff Coins, the more predominant form of game currency that can’t be redeemed for cash prizes.
How to Get Bonuses for Online Sportsbooks in California
Sports betting may not be legal in California just yet, but future California sports bettors can still get a sense of the steps required prior to placing their first wager:
Step 1: Find the Sportsbook
If you want a breakdown of all potential California sports betting sites, we’ve got you covered. Read our reviews and pick your favorite CA sportsbooks you want to use.
Step 2: Use Our California Sportsbook Promo Codes
Once you’ve picked the sportsbook or sportsbooks you want to bet with, come back to this page or head to one of our sportsbook reviews to use our exclusive California sportsbook bonus codes.
Just click “Claim Now” on this page or the review page, and you’ll be immediately directed to the sportsbook — and the sportsbook will already know you want to opt-in for the welcome bonus.
Step 3: Register for the Sportsbook
Once you’ve clicked our promo code link, you’ll need to register for the sportsbook.
This step is pretty self-explanatory. Double-check your name and address to make sure they match your payment method and ID — that will make identity identification and cashouts a whole lot easier down the line. Some sportsbook bonuses will be available after you sign-up, so you might already be rewarded after completing this step.
At this point, you might also want to download the sportsbook’s mobile app. Be sure to download the sportsbook app, not the DFS or Casino app. Most major sportsbook operators that will come to California either also offer DFS, an online Casino, or both (like DraftKings and FanDuel).
So make sure you’re downloading DraftKings Sportsbook, for instance, and not DraftKings DFS.
For iOS users, sportsbook apps can be downloaded in the App Store. Android users can find most sports betting apps in the Google Play Store, but they’ll have to download some directly from the sportsbook’s website.
Step 4: Make a Deposit
Most often, bonuses come after users make their first deposit. So make sure you use the sportsbook’s promo code or bonus code during sign-up or before making your first deposit.
In order to fully take advantage of a deposit bonus, you have to deposit the full amount. For instance, DraftKings offers a 20% first deposit match up to $1,000. To get the full $200 bonus match, you’d need to deposit $1,000.
There’s no right way to utilize a deposit bonus. Decide what deposit amount is right for you.
Step 5: Start Betting
Whether it’s a free bet, risk-free bet, or deposit bonus, you need to start placing bets in order to take full advantage of your promo offer. So, at your own pace, go ahead and find some games to bet on. Have fun, but please gamble responsibly.
Are Sportsbook Bonuses Worth It?
That answer depends on each individual bettor, what they are or aren’t willing to invest in terms of money and time. And those factors can vary based on the type of sportsbook promo, too.
For instance, you’d be hard-pressed to find a situation in which a free bet isn’t worth it. It is, after all, a free bet. There are no playthrough requirements, and usually the only restrictions involve the odds you can wager on with that free bet. These bonuses are a great way to get your feet wet in sports betting.
Risk-free bets sound appealing, and they have their advantages. But it’s important to read the terms and conditions to know exactly what you’ll need to do to access that risk-free bet. We recommend you only opt in for risk-free bets with a 1x wagering requirement. That means that you only need to bet the value of the risk-free bet once to keep your winnings.
The terms and conditions are even more important to consider for deposit bonuses. This type of promo is, again, eye-catching. That’s the whole point. But they come with something called playthrough requirements, which dictate how much money you have to bet before your deposit match enters your account. A deposit bonus sounds a lot less fun when it’s attached to a 5x playthrough requirement, doesn’t it? On the other hand, if a requirement is just 1x, that’s likely going to be a good deal.
And, while BetRivers’ bonus offer of $500 sounds small, it’s appealing when you consider it only has a 1x playthrough requirement.
Comparing Potential California Sportsbooks
Although promo offers are a great way to determine which sports betting app is right for you, it’s far from the only way.
Things such as app quality, betting options, unique features, and much more can help determine which sportsbook you might prefer over another. Even though we recommend you download multiple apps to take advantage of welcome bonuses and have options when you’re odds shopping, almost everyone has a favorite.
We can’t know for sure which online sportsbooks would launch in California if Prop 27 passes this November. But we have a pretty good sense of candidates, based on US market share and how much the companies have donated to the Prop 27 campaign.

California Sportsbook Bonuses FAQs
Yes. And, actually, we strongly recommend sports bettors in any state where it’s legal download multiple sports betting apps. Why? Two reasons. One: If you’re going to become a sports bettor, you might as well take advantage of as much free money as possible to start out. Two: It’s always smart to shop around at different sportsbooks to make sure you bet using the most favorable odds available.
Different sportsbooks will have different playthrough requirements to fully access their welcome bonuses. Most often, however, these requirements don’t exceed 5x. DraftKings, on the other hand, releases $1 in site credit for every $25 a bettor wagers.
A 5x playthrough requirement would make a bettor wager $500 before they can access their site credits if they deposit $50 with a 100% deposit match. Why? Because that total first deposit, with the match, adds up to $100. Multiply $100 by the 5x playthrough requirement, and you get $500.
Bonus abuse is utilizing a loophole in the fine print to cash out bonus money while minimizing risk. However, terms and conditions at legally licensed casinos ensure that bonus abuse isn’t possible.
Bettors are typically required to use the bonus money on odds longer than -200, and playthrough requirements are strictly enforced. Ultimately, it’s not something bettors have to worry about if they follow the terms and conditions laid out beneath the specific bonus offer.
DraftKings California may offer a 20% deposit bonus for up to $1,000, plus a $50 free bet.
They credit your account with $1 in bonus money for every $5 in real-money wagers placed. That means you’ll need to deposit $5,000 to receive the maximum bonus amount.
FanDuel California may offer a “no sweat first bet” up to $1,000. FanDuel invites new members to place a bet as high as $1,000 risk-free. Odds need to be -200 or longer. If the bet loses, the money is refunded in site credits.
If BetMGM California ever launches in the future, it may offer the same welcome bonus it offers in states where it’s currently legal: a risk-free bet up to $1,000. Terms and conditions apply. That means, for example, you would get $100 refunded in site credits if you wager $100 on your first bet and lose.
If Caesars Sportsbook California ever launches, it may offer the same welcome promo it gives in states where it’s currently legal: Your first bet is on Caesars up to $1,250. Terms and conditions apply. The wording is fancy, but the promo is basic: If you lose your first bet, Caesars will refund you in site credits up to $1,250.
Sports betting isn’t legal yet in California. However, that could change in November. California voters have the option to vote for Prop 26, which would allow in-person sports betting at California casinos and the state’s four horse racetracks, and/or Prop 27, which would allow online sports betting.
If and when sports betting launches in California, the minimum age will in all likelihood be 21. Yes, there are 18+ California casinos. However, across the US, all states with legal sports betting have 21 as the minimum age requirement.
A deposit bonus simply means the sportsbook will fund your account a certain amount depending on how much your first deposit is. For example: DraftKings offers a 20% first deposit match up to $1,000. So, if your first deposit is $100, DraftKings will put $20 into your account. Terms and conditions apply.
A risk-free bet means the sportsbook will insure your first bet in site credits if it loses. For instance: BetMGM offers a risk-free bet on your first bet up to $1,000. So, if your first bet is $100 and it loses, BetMGM will refund that $100 in site credits. Terms and conditions apply.
A no-deposit bonus is exactly what is sounds like: a promo offer than requires no deposit to take advantage of it. The most common type of no-deposit bonus is a free bet. For instance, in addition to its 20% deposit match up to $1,000, DraftKings also offers a $50 free bet.
